Mariel + Caio :: Duluth, Minnesota Engagement Photographer

Mariel is from New Mexico. Caio? From Brazil. I'm not sure either of them experienced the type of cold we braved for their engagement photos before coming to Duluth to attend UW-Superior. With temperatures hovering in the single digits and a wind chill below zero, we went from Canal Park to Caribou Coffee where the two had their first date and then finally Barker's Island. All of us reached that stage of cold where the movement of our mouths lag behind the words we are trying to say and our fingers lack any dexterity. Luckily, my shutter finger remained functional. Congrats Mariel and Caio and have a great wedding later this year!

Now that I've done my favorite wedding shots from 2011, it's time to do my favorite engagement photos from 2011. The engagement session is one of my favorite parts of working with couples because there are few constraints on time like a wedding day and you can really get to know the couple. It's a perfect opportunity to get some nice shots while pushing your creativity. Love it. Chrissy + Rodney :: Two Harbors, MN Engagement Photographer

When I first started talking to Rodney about shooting his engagement session, we both agreed that the lack of snow in northern Minnesota was not going to last. After all, the engagement session was scheduled for mid-December and we were talking in late-November. Plenty of time. Right? Well, usually at this time of the year, northern Minnesota and the north shore of Lake Superior are encased in ice and snow. This year? Not so much. So when December 14th rolled around and there was no snow, we decided to make the best of it and that wasn't hard. Between the beautiful north shore of Lake Superior, Chrissy's family farm and the smiles that formed when these two were in close proximity, it was a pretty fun engagement session.

Sometimes things get so busy in September and October around here that the only time for an engagement session is at sunrise. Sometimes that's a really good thing. Most of the time I'll shoot engagement sessions in the evening since that is the light I like best, but shooting at sunrise offers some unique pictures that you can't get other times of the day. I tried shooting one of these a couple months ago, but the sunrise came with thunderstorms and clouds. BOOOO!!!! This time we were luckier. We had a spectacular sunrise for Katy and Jon's engagement session. If you live here in Duluth and haven't seen a Lake Superior sunrise, then you are really missing out. It's awesome.

The light was absolutely delicious when Tiara and Zach came to Duluth for their engagement photos. The calm glow of the evening sun was the perfect compliment to Tiara's hair. Engagement sessions like this are one of the many reasons why I love fall in Duluth. The light is just different and it's awesome. Love it. Love it. Love it. Hopefully the light will be half as good at their wedding in June as it was on this day in September. Enjoy.
