I was about one block away so maybe 1/10 of a mile. But with the 300 and the extender the focal length was 420mm coupled with the resolution of the 5D Mark 2, I was able to blow the image up pretty well. And because of a branch being in the way, I had to manually focus, which if you've grown up on autofocus, makes you really appreciate what the old-timers in the past did.

Wow, that's intense. Glad no one was hurt! How far away from the scene would you say you were when you took that shot of the suspect being taken into custody? A few hundred feet?
